Ethereum Institutional launched on July 1, 2026 as an independent nonprofit backed by anchor funders BitMine, SharpLink and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, focused on institutional adoption.

Led by David Walsh, Marius Smith and Matthew Dawson, it grew out of the enterprise function previously run inside the Ethereum Foundation and has built 500+ institutional relationships spanning executives with ~$250T AUM.

Standard Chartered endorsed the launch as bridging Ethereum's long-standing communications gap with major financial institutions; Ethereum then held ~58% of tokenized RWA and about half the stablecoin market.

Its initial ecosystem funding round was anchored by BitMine, SharpLink, Joe Lubin and co-founder Mihai Alisie, with 100+ supporters including Aave, Circle, Consensys and ether.fi.

The site tracks live institutional deployments—JPMorgan (May 2026), Morgan Stanley (July), BlackRock (August), Robinhood Chain (July)—now exceeding 107 on Ethereum mainnet and L2s.

On July 29 and 30, 2026, Ethereum Institutional announced its first ecosystem funding round and supporter coalition, anchored by BitMNR, SharpLink, Joseph Lubin and Mihai Alisie, with more than 100 individuals and organizations participating including Aave, Arbitrum, Circle, ConsenSys, DefiLlama, Flashbots, Ledger, Lido, Linea, Optimism, Uniswap Labs and zkSync.

Ethereum Institutional's site tracks 107 institutional deployments by month: J.P. Morgan Asset Management's tokenized government money market fund in May, staking in the Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust in July, Robinhood Chain in July, BlackRock tokenized money market fund share classes in August, Baillie Gifford's short-duration bond fund BAGEY in August, ARK Invest's ARKVX entitlement token in September, and Standard Chartered's ETH spot trading from the DIFC in September; on October 19 Kinexys extended JPMD from Base to Ethereum L1. A first institutional briefing was published October 15, and an EIF forum with Bitmine is set for London on November 12.

Ethereum Institutional's Future strategy and roadmap: Ethereum Institutional turns Ethereum's scattered institutional outreach into a single neutral front door: ties to more than 500 tier-one banks, asset managers and custodians, plus a forum drawing over 150 digital-asset executives, feed standards work and deployment playbooks, while teams in New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore are complemented by Zurich, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Abu Dhabi. Pressure comes from both sides: Ethereum hosts roughly 60% of stablecoin supply and nearly two-thirds of tokenised RWA, yet rival chains field well-funded business teams for the same clients; and with research spun out to Ethlabs, it must prove that a neutral window converts into real deployments rather than relationship upkeep.

David Walsh is a co-founder of Ethereum Institutional. He began in audit and advisory in EY's financial services practice, then joined the Ethereum Foundation, where he created and ran the enterprise function. Around 2024 he and several Foundation colleagues spun that work into a standing institution-facing organisation.

Matthew Dawson is a co-founder and was the Foundation's first enterprise lead, previously a consultant at Accenture translating institutional requirements into technical designs; Marius Smith, the third co-founder, worked at Eigen Labs, N26 and Google and covers engineering and experience. The organisation also seats regional and research roles: Benjamin Chodroff heads technical strategy for the Middle East and North Africa after enterprise architecture consulting; David Duong heads the US after research roles at an exchange; Ben Thalman heads research. The working model is working groups plus resident researchers, with research under Thalman and regional heads under the founders.
